भारतवर्ष में शिवरात्रि का त्यौहार बहुत धूम धाम से मनाया जाता है। इस दिन श्रद्धालु सबसे पहले गंगा नदी में स्नान करके अपने पापों को धोते हैं। उसके पश्चात सफ़ेद या पीले वस्त्र धारण कर पूजा विधि में सम्मिलित होते हैं।

पूजा के लिए सबसे पहले भगवान् शिव की शिवलिंग को दूध से स्नान कराया जाता है उसके बाद शिवलिंग पर सिंदूर लगाया जाता है और फल चढ़ाये जाते हैं। इसके बाद धुप या अगरबती से उनकी पूजा की जाती है।
